Did you know?

Financial services represent a $6.8 billion industry in the Corridor.

August's Quote

This is probably one of the best places in the world for a technology company. It has a great combination of favorable cost factors, core technology base and diverse set of skill sets. It’s a universally talented pool."

Leading R&D Lab to Establish Research Center at USF

Last month, Governor Charlie Crist announced the expansion of Charles Stark Draper Laboratory Inc. which will be establishing a BioMEMS R&D Center at the University of South Florida (USF) and a Multi Chip Module (MCM) Center in St. Petersburg.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based research lab will partner with USF and its medical school, SRI-St. Petersburg and other organizations to develop applications for its microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technologies for medical and biological solutions. Its MCM Center will focus on refining multiple integrated circuits to create smaller and more complex electronic systems.

A partnership of 10 regional and statewide governmental and economic development organizations including the Florida High Tech Corridor Council worked to facilitate Draper Laboratory's expansion into Tampa Bay, which will add 165 new jobs with an average wage of $75,000.

UF Professor Seeks Patent for Flying Saucer-Like Aircraft

University of Florida (UF) Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer Associate Professor Subrata Roy has submitted a patent application for a circular, spinning aircraft that resembles Hollywood's flying saucers. The prototype of the "wingless electromagnetic air vehicle," or WEAV, measures less than six inches across and will be efficiently powered by on-board batteries. NASA and the U.S. Air Force have expressed interest in the aircraft, and the University is seeking to license the design, which can be scaled up and would be ideal for surveillance and navigation. Roy says his revolutionary prototype, which would be able to lift off vertically and hover, and may one day soar through other atmospheres besides Earth's own.

UF's mechanical and aerospace engineering department and its electrical and computer engineering department will work together to produce the saucer.

UCF Students Convert Waste Vegetable Oil into Biodiesel Fuel

Mechanical engineering students at the University of Central Florida (UCF) have designed and constructed a reactor that successfully converts used vegetable oil into biodiesel fuel that can power automobile engines – at just 80 cents a gallon. UCF's Department of Sustainability and Energy Management provided $2,000 to help develop the reactor.

The students – Jaimeson Jeffery, Michael Schulist, Eric Williams and Chad Heinrich – designed the system for a Senior Design class project using parts that are easy to find at local hardware stores so assembly would be user-friendly and affordable for the masses. They have since formed a company called Amber Station with the goal of assembling and selling reactors to companies with large fleets so they may create their own fuel.

UCF plans to produce biodiesel at a cost of $1.30 to $1.50 a gallon with the reactor to power its diesel fleet – a measure that will save the University thousands of dollars per year.

INDUSTRY SPOTLIGHT

Financial Services
Financial ServicesUsing the latest advances in technological security and online asset management, Corridor companies have added new life to the age old industry of banking and financial services. Core vendors have blossomed from the Corridor's growing wealth of programmers, engineers and innovative minds. And thanks to the region's newest developments in software and tech systems these banks utilize, major players in the financial sector call the Corridor home.

Fiserv Imagesoft, (http://www.imagesoft.fiserv.com) a unit of the Lake Mary-based Fiserv Corporation, has been ahead of the curve for quite some time. The company serves the financial services sector by streamlining processes and providing imaging and content management solutions to the financial marketplace. Its automated fraud detection and case management system, CheckFree FraudNet™, has blocked more than 21,000 attempted fraudulent bill payment transactions totaling $287.9 million since the service began in November 2005. The FraudNet service is part of a suite of fraud prevention solutions offered by Fiserv that helps detect and mitigate fraud from log-in authentication to back-end payment processing, resulting in a lower cost of ownership in the online channel for financial institutions.

Tampa Bay's thriving financial services sector continues to grow throughout the entire U.S. with St. Petersburg-based Raymond James Financial (http://www.raymondjames.com) leading the way. Serving all 50 states and numerous countries worldwide, Raymond James has been ranked among the best financial institutions in the country by the industry's leading research analysts, Forbes magazine, Fortune magazine and the Kanbay Research Institute.

Corridor companies large and small have continued to make an impact on the financial services sector, providing the new standard of technological services that has made the industry what it is today.

FACES OF TECHNOLOGY

Scott FarisMuch like the advanced batteries his company is developing, Scott Faris serves as a high powered energy source. The founder and CEO of Orlando-based Planar Energy Devices is a serial entrepreneur who has spent 20 years building and operating an array of more than 20 startup and emerging growth technology companies.

"I apply energy to the system," says Faris. He began working to spin technology companies out of universities in 1986, while studying information systems at Penn State and working for a venture capital firm. He moved to Tampa Bay the next year and founded the Enterprise Corporation, a technology accelerator, later serving as director of the Florida Seed Capital Fund and director of technology commercialization at the Center for Microelectronics Research. He has also held leadership roles at successful university spin-outs Ocean Optics (USF) and WaveGuide Solutions (University of North Carolina).

His latest project, Planar Energy, is developing commercial uses and efficient manufacturing processes for advanced micro-batteries – high energy density "solid state" thin-film and large-format batteries and applications for original equipment manufacturers. The company's core technology is licensed from two federal research labs, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. It's focused on enabling a new generation of lithium metal and lithium ion batteries that are safe, compact and deployable in very flexible arrangements – a promising offering at a time when the Consumer Electronics Association forecasts the 2008 U.S. market at $170 billion.

New FPL Solar Energy Center to be Built at Kennedy Space Center
Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) plans to build a solar photovoltaic power generation system on 60 acres of land at Kennedy Space Center as part of an agreement it signed at Governor Charlie Crist's state Climate Change Summit in June. The solar energy facility, called the Space Coast Next Generation Solar Energy Center, will produce about 10 megawatts of energy, enough to power about 3,000 homes. The FPL-maintained facility would convert sunlight directly to electricity, use no fuel or water and produce no waste.

FPL also intends to build Next Generation Solar Energy Centers in DeSoto and Martin counties by 2009, which will provide electricity for about 33,000 homes. The three projects will prevent about 3.5 million tons of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere – the equivalent of removing 25,000 cars from the road per year.
